Despite premiering back in 2022, the award-winning Apple TV+ series Severancehas yet to release its highly anticipated second season. Now, an interview with the show’s writer and co-executive producer Mohamad El Masri has revealed that plans for additional seasons have already been “mapped out” by series creator Dan Erickson and executive producer and director Ben Stiller — although Apple has yet to officially confirm the future of the sci-fi workplace drama.
Earning 14 Emmy nominations and two wins for its first season, which debuted in February 2022, Severance was an instant hit among viewers. But with the second season slated for release in early 2025, making it a long three-years between seasons due to several production issues, fans are feeling more than a little restless. However, speaking to IndieWire during the promotion of his YouTube short film Other Other, El Masri reported that, while working on season two, Erickson and Stiller were also planning seasons three and beyond. According to El Masri, these plans include answers to many of the show’s biggest mysteries, as well as the potential for a time jump to accommodate the large gaps in between releases.

Severance Offers a Chilling Message About Office Horrors
As we return to the office, Apple TV’s Severance is a timely reminder of the horrors contained within the workplace.
With season two still in the works, it’s difficult to imagine what the future of Severance might look like — although fans have certainly tried their best to make predictions. But El Masri teased a meticulously plotted trajectory for the show, in which audiences won’t be disappointed by loose threads or unanswered questions. “There was always a thinking ahead to future seasons,” El Masri stated. “Even in Season 2, we were talking about, what is the end game and how does this show end? A lot of work was talking about that.” He also expressed hope that the longer production times for the show would not become the norm, but ultimately said that it was up to Hollywood.
I will say, will it take another 3.5 years for the show to come out with Season 3? I mean, I hope not, just as a fan. I hope we don’t have to keep ourselves waiting for that long. But, you know, it’s Hollywood.

For fans frustrated by the long wait, Apple TV+ has revealed a brief synopsis of Severance season two, which reads: “In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.”Additions to the main cast also provide some clues about what awaits viewers next year, with heavy hitters like Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie joining Arrested Development‘s Alia Shawkat and Fringe‘s John Noble in the florescent world of Lumon Industries.
Unfortunately, very little else has been revealed besides the premiere date: January 17th, 2025. Members of the cast have also promised to shatter audiences’ expectations, further increasing the suspense — John Turturro stated, “We are delving into the unknown that the audience is waiting for, and then doing it incrementally,” while Patricia Arquette simply warned fans to be “very afraid” of what’s to come.
