Despite the first The Old Guard outing being released way back in 2020, and a sequel being announced shortly after, fans are still waiting for the action movie to arrive on Netflix. Thankfully, one of the returning stars, Luca Marinelli, who starred in the first outing as immortal warrior Nicky a.k.a. Nicolò di Genova, has offered a promising update on the comic book movie follow-up, calling it “really cool.”
Based on the graphic novel by writer Greg Rucka, The Old Guard follows a group of mercenaries. But this is no ordinary group of mercenaries, they are all centuries-old immortals with the ability to heal themselves. The first movie centers on the group as they discover that someone is onto their secret, forcing them to fight to protect their freedom. The Old Guard quickly proved to be a major hit for the streaming platform and was met with largely positive reviews (80% on Rotten Tomatoes) as well as being viewed by 72 million households over its first four weeks.
Fans of this (slowly) emerging action franchise have had to be patient, but Luca Marinelli assures audiences that the wait will have been worth it, saying about the sequel in a recent discussion with Collider:
“I’m very [much] looking forward to seeing it, to watching it. But what can I say? It’s really cool. I’m very looking forward to seeing it, to watching it, as the audience I hope.”
Why Is The Old Guard 2 Taking So Long?
The Old Guard 2 is set to be directed by Victoria Mahoney from a script written by Greg Rucka. The sequel will see Charlize Theron reprise the lead role of Andy, with original cast members KiKi Layne, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Marwan Kenzari also returning for more immortal action. Kill Bill star Uma Thurman and Snake Eyes’ Henry Golding join the cast in undisclosed roles.

Netflix’s The Old Guard 2 Production Takes a Surprising Turn
We can only hope this won’t result in more delays…
Plot details currently remain under wraps but, this being a comic book movie, we merely need to turn to the source material for clues. The Old Guard 2 is likely to be based on the second chapter of the comic, “The Old Guard Book Two: Force Multiplied,” and you can check out the synopsis (and wonder what this might mean for the movie below:
“When you’ve waged war as long as Andy and her squad, you’ve gotten your hands more than bloody. Now, the day has come to confront the sins of the past. But as Nile struggles to make peace with the team, the last person Andy expected to ever see again returns to challenge not only what Andy believes in, but what the team is willing to fight for.”
Theron recently explained partly why The Old Guard 2 has taken so long to make its way to screens, revealing that it was mostly due to a changing of the guard at Netflix. To assure fans further, Theron stated that the action sequel will be released “soon” and that she “really” loves the movie.
