Matthew Lillard, the horror star who played Stu Macher in Scream, believes the character he played in just one movie is alive. Lillard joins millions of horror fans who have waited for a screenwriter bold enough to bring the character back in a very absurd, Scream-esque way.
Stu, whose “death by TV set” remains one of the most memorable in the Scream franchise, is a favorite character among fans. And we’re talking about a franchise with several iconic characters who have found a way to come back, even in the new reboot trilogy where Scream 4‘s Kirby showed up. And now, perhaps it’s Stu’s time to shine again.
Per a report by Bloody Disgusting, Lillard showed up on Drew Barrymore’s talk show, Drew, to speak about his hosting gig in Killer Cakes, his return in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and more. Right from the start, Barrymore reminisced about their time together in the first Scream, where Barrymore’s Casey gets unexpectedly killed very soon in the movie. After commenting on the possibility that Casey could be alive, Lillard nervously admits the following:
Stu is definitely alive, right? My character Stu is definitely alive.
The actor was then asked if he would come back for a Scream sequel, and while we’re sure his return would completely revolutionize the franchise, he also says that it doesn’t fully depend on him but on the new team behind the new installment. We don’t know how big of a fan Lillard is of the new reboot trilogy, but the fact that he knows Kevin Williamson will be directing the next film is a bit exciting. Per Lillard’s reply about returning:
“I would love it. If it made sense for the franchise. If Kevin [Williamson] liked it. Then sure. Obviously.”
Would Bringing an Icon of the Scream Franchise Back From the Dead Work?
The Scream fanbase is big, and the fans are probably the reason why the Scream universe is set to continue after the lead stars of the new trilogy exited the project for various reasons. Sidney will return after her absence in Scream VI, which seems like a knee-jerk reaction to the chaos that has surrounded the production of Scream VII. Could Sidney’s return mean that others will also make an appearance?
In the case of Stu, it would certainly please a lot of fans to see him back in some way. In the last movie, horror specialist Mindy threw a hint about his return when they found the TV that killed Stu, and her snarky comment was, “If you believe he is dead.” Perhaps this could be a not-so-subtle hint at the plan already being set in motion to bring Lillard back to the fold.

Taking a look at 10 legacy characters that should make a comeback for what seems to be the last Scream installment.
Since 1996, there have been many who have worn the Ghostface mask, each with their own agenda that often had to do with terrorizing Sidney Prescott, the first “final girl” whose mother’s death wasn’t her only traumatic experience. One year after her brutal murder, a couple of horror-loving maniacs thought about revenge in a very peculiar way. Well, at least that was the case of Billy Loomis, whose father had committed adultery with Sidney’s mom, causing his mother to abandon her family.
Stu Macher stood by Billy’s side, and while he reveals to Sidney that he has a thing for her, it’s not entirely clear why he joined Billy in causing havoc in the small town of Woodsboro. Is it “peer pressure”? Is it straight-up pleasure? Perhaps that would be something that would finally get a clearer answer if the character does happen to make an appearance again in the franchise.
