After six years together, American-Irish actress Saoirse Ronan and Scottish actor Jack Lowden are officially newlyweds. According to the Scottish civil marriage registry records, the Oscar-nominated actress said “I do” to her Mary Queen of Scots co-star over the weekend of July 20, 2024, in Edinburgh, Scotland. The couple’s civil wedding ceremony was reportedly a “low-key” and intimate gathering at Edinburgh Central Registrar’s Office, with only a few of their friends and family in attendance, per Irish Independent. The publication also noted that the service was a top-secret affair, where guests were “sworn to secrecy.”
Nine months prior to their big day, the couple piqued the public’s curiosity and fueled speculation of their supposed engagement when Ronan donned a diamond ring on her left ring finger at the Louis Vuitton Womenswear Spring-Summer 2024 show in Paris. The duo, who tend to keep their relationship out of the limelight, didn’t comment on the rumors and have yet to personally announce their engagement.
Ronan and Lowden first met and allegedly fell in love while shooting Mary Queen of Scots, a 2018 period drama that explores the life of Mary Stuart. In the film, Ronan depicts the former queen of Scotland, while Lowden plays her character’s second husband, Lord Darnley. While playing onscreen love interests, the two allegedly fell for one another in real life.
In an interview with AOL at the time, Lowden opened up about his “remarkable” experience working with Ronan on the motion picture. “The woman is a force of nature on and off screen and utterly fearless and a brilliant leader as well,” he gushed. “For being 24 years old, it’s just constantly amazing to me. Not just her work but how she is on a set is amazing.” Ronan returned the expression of mutual admiration for her now-husband in an interview with People in 2022. “I completely trust his eye,” she revealed. “And I know when he says something’s working, it really is, because he doesn’t ever sugarcoat anything. So I think that really helps, having someone that you really trust.”
