PEOPLE can exclusively share that the award-winning actress, 53, will lend her voice to a new audio edition of Min Jin Lee’s acclaimed 2017 novel, , releasing from Hachette Audio on Oct. 1.
Lee’s novel follows four generations of a Korean family, and begins in the 1900s, when teenager Sunja falls in love with a wealthy stranger. When Sunja finds out that she is pregnant — and that the stranger is already married — she makes the decision to leave her home and wed a minister who is traveling to Japan.
Sunja’s choice reverberates through her family for generations, in the National Book Award finalist that discusses family history, immigration, grief and war.
“[Readers will] get reacquainted with Lee’s rich storylines and unforgettable characters, and the game the book takes its name from, pachinko, a pinball-like game that runs through the generations as a metaphor for life itself, a gamble with no guarantees,” reads a statement from Hachette Audio shared with PEOPLE.
Below, listen to an exclusive clip from the beginning of Chapter 4, in which where Sunja meets the new fish broker, the flashy Koh Hansu.
The novel is also akin to Oh’s family story, whose parents immigrated to Canada from South Korea, and raised the actress and her siblings in a Korean community in Ottawa.
Pachinko will be the actress’s first solo audiobook narration as well, though she has been a part of multi-cast audiobooks in the past, including novels like Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables and Han Kang’s Human Acts.
