Warning! The Following Contains SPOILERS from Deadpool & Wolverine.Chris Evans absolutely owns his limited screentime in Deadpool & Wolverine, and friend Ryan Reynolds can’t thank him, or praise the A-list actor enough. Director Shawn Levy’s collaboration with Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is the talk of Tinseltown, as the comic book movie has officially become the second film to cross the billion-dollar barrier in 2024.
And even though the Merc with a Mouth’s MCU adventure rides the coattails of a lot of cool characters and their respective “cameos,” Evans’ return as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, was — for the lack of a better word — fire. And Reynolds shared some behind-the-scenes photos from D&W’S set as he praised Evans. Reynolds wrote (via Instagram):
“Thank you, @chrisevans.
Some of the greatest moments I’ve ever experienced in a theater were authored by this guy.
Some of the hardest laughing I’ve ever done came from listening to Chris tell a story — about anything. And he got me again this year.
Chris is one of those movie stars who’s actually better than you hope he is.
And people hold him to a crazy high standard.
He‘s just the absolute best.”
While most audiences probably think they’ve witnessed Wade Wilson (Reynolds) and Logan (Jackman) meeting Captain America in the Void, Evans turns out to be playing Marvel’s hot-headed Johnny Storm, whom he originally suited up for nearly 20 years ago in Fantastic Four (2005) and its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). And Reynolds is quick to acknowledge that this is goodbye for the Human Torch. Check out the BTS photos featuring Evans, plus Reynolds’ Instagram post in its entirety below:
‘Part of the Movie’s Theme Is Saying Goodbye’
Deadpool & Wolverine is the No. 1 movie in the world. And while Chris Evans’ Human Torch dies a brutal little death at the hands of Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), the Fantastic Four member has some hilariously unforgettable moments on-screen. And be sure to stick around for the post-credits’ scene, which features one of the funniest monologues big-mouth Johnny Storm has ever delivered. Reynolds acknowledged the theme of saying goodbye in Deadpool 3, which certainly applies to the late Human Torch. Reynolds wrote in the same Instagram post, specifically about the late Mr. Storm (below):
“Part of the movie’s theme is saying goodbye…
And one of the gifts of working on the film is that we got to say goodbye on different terms.
Seeing Johnny Storm (if only for a short while) was like seeing someone you miss come back from the dead in a dream.
Way too brief and too lovely to be real. Goodbyes are hard.
It was hard saying goodbye to Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm. But at least we got to actually say it this time.”

Emma Corrin was “hiding in my seat” after their character Cassandra Nova killed off one of the movie’s biggest cameos.
Evans called it a “dream come true” playing Johnny again, but sadly, the character is no more. And as only Reynolds can do, the actor took what was a very poignant and straight-from-the-heart Instagram post and turned it into a funny life lesson for the now deceased Human Torch. Reynolds continued by writing the following (below):
“On the other hand, it wouldn’t have been necessary if he hadn’t run his fat-ass mouth around Cassandra.
Or if she hadn’t zip-zapped his skin, leaving his organs to splash crudely onto the ground, while the soil greedily drank his blood.
It was horrible.”
For those who still haven’t seen the film, witnessing Chris Evans work in Deadpool & Wolverine is worth the price of admission alone. But while the movie could have hung its hat exclusively on Marvel cameos and spectacle, Reynolds, director Shawn Levy and Hugh Jackman make sure that story and character are king in Deadpool & Wolverine. And that’s the reason Deadpool & Wolverine will have a chance to catch and surpass Inside Out 2 en route to possibly becoming this year’s highest-grossing blockbuster.
