Ryan Coogler has put Michael B. Jordan in the boxing ring and transported him to Wakanda. Now he is putting him in an entirely new situation in the first trailer for Sinners, the vampire feature coming from Warner Bros.
In the mysterious preview, Jordan’s Smoke says via voiceover, “I’ve been all over this world. I’ve seen men die in ways, I ain’t even know was possible.”
He adds, over footage of people running from some unseen danger and someone showing up at church with their face scratched, “Of all the things that I’ve seen, I ain’t ever seen no demons, no ghosts, no magic — ’til now.”
The trailer ends with Jordan leading a group of people ready to fight as a preacher says, “You keep dancing with the devil, and one day he’s going to follow you home.”
The synopsis, which teases a “new vision of fear,” reads: “Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”
Coogler wrote and directed the film that also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller and Delroy Lindo.
Coogler is one of the most in-demand filmmakers working today, and Sinners is particularly anticipated as it is a chance for him to bring an original work to the screen rather than working from existing IP. Warner Bros. won the rights to the film after a bidding war in February, with the unique provision that returns the rights to the filmmaker after a number of years.
Coogler and Jordan have a long history together, with the actor appearing in all of his films dating back to the 2013 Sundance drama Fruitvale Station, which also starred Jordan. Together, they re-invented the Rocky franchise with 2015’s Creed, which marked Coogler’s first studio feature.
And Jordan was by his side as the villain Kilmonger as Coogler stepped into superstar filmmaker status with 2018’s Black Panther, the groundbreaking Marvel Studios film that earned a best picture nom. Jordan also had a brief cameo in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2021). In the years since, Jordan has become a filmmaker in his own right, directing Creed III.
Coogler is producing Sinners via his Proximity Media with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. Ludwig Göransson, Will Greenfield and Rebecca Cho executive produce.
The studio has set the film for a March 7, 2025 release date.
