In a new interview with Classic Rock, Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover named his favorite Deep Purple songs. While naming a song from their hit album ‘Machine Head,’ the bassist said he never understood why people liked his band. Glover named ‘Space Truckin” and explained:
“When I lived in America I turned on the car radio and heard this great song: really funky, but tough-sounding. I thought: ‘This is fantastic.’ It took me about ten seconds to realise it was us – the funky section with the jam between Paicey and Ritchie. I’ve never been able to see what other people liked about us. We had great success, but why? Suddenly I understood. I know that sounds strange.”
Glover Didn’t Think Deep Purple Would Get Big
Deep Purple recently released a deluxe version of ‘Machine Head.’ The new version was mixed by Dweezil Zappa, son of Frank Zappa. During another interview with Eska Rock, he was asked how he feels knowing that even after 50 years, the songs from ‘Machine Head’ are still adored by both longtime fans and new generations today. Glover finds it ‘humbling’ that people still listen to a 50-year-old album:
“I suppose in a word, the word that comes to mind is humbling. I’m just constantly surprised at the course of my life and our life as a band.”
And apparently, what they did had a ‘lasting value,’ thanks to the fans:
“Normally when you join a band in the ’70s, it’s gonna last a couple of years or three years, and then you’re gonna lose the public and you go back to being what you were before, which is nobody. But that didn’t happen. And it’s all down to the fans. What we did obviously had a lasting value. I don’t know why. I feel very lucky, actually, that I never had a job, that I started in a band when I was 15 and I’m still in a band and I’m 78. It doesn’t make sense to me. But I’m very happy about it.”
