Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler tried to ruin Kansas’s show during a shared bill in the past. Rich Williams recalled the incident in an appearance on AXS TV. The guitarist noted that the two bands are on good terms now but shared:
“Nothing against him, it’s a funny story now, but Steven Tyler, who is a tremendous rock vocalist… At the time, he had a problem sometimes with the bands going over a little too well, and we were told that sometimes, he will come out and unplug the band.”
Kansas was on high alert for any antics Tyler might’ve pulled during their show:
“So, what we did was we ran dummy lines to where he could get to, and we ran our main power to another direction that was hidden. So, he came out there to stop our show, and it didn’t work, and I guess he got quite upset about it.”
This wasn’t a good memory for the band. Williams said:
“Our bass player went after him, and there was a confrontation, and it wasn’t a good moment.”
Things Changed In Recent Years
Rock groups often tried to outdo each other back in the day. The guitarist explained:
“So many young bands in that era were all very competitive with each other. It’s not that way anymore, but at the time, ‘Just follow that,’ you know. You really wanted to show off what you could do. And there was a lot of camaraderie and energy that got focused into that.”
Both Aerosmith and Kansas have been around for around fifty years now, but the former is nearing its end. Tyler’s band is saying goodbye with the ‘Peace Out’ tour.
Aerosmith had to cancel their final shows in September 2023 because their vocalist hurt his vocal cords. They are now waiting to announce new dates.
Meanwhile, Kansas is getting ready to celebrate their 50th anniversary with a US tour. The shows will start in Toledo, Ohio, on April 5.
