Rex Brown said Pantera’s Minneapolis show won’t be used for a live album.
Before the band’s show on August 15, comedian Craig Gass told the audience, “You are about to watch an exclusive show from the band Pantera. The rumors got out quickly, [and] you guys bought up all the tickets. And you may have heard this rumor. And this is also true. We are recording our first-ever live album right here at the First Avenue.”
He added, “So, there’s a couple things you need to know about it. First of all, you will all, for eternity, be heard on a live Pantera album. That’s the good news. The bad news, you’re not gonna get paid for this. Welcome to the music business.”
Later, Brown confirmed on Instagram that Gass’s announcement about a Pantera live album was just a joke in his stand-up routine. Brown also shared some photos from the Minneapolis show and added a caption, “Photos from the First Avenue! What a great night! And no, we didn’t record a live album that night. That was a joke that Craig Gass made!”
“Oh, absolutely. Yeah, I could tell you more but I’m not going to,” Brown said in March about the possibility of new Pantera material.
Drummer Charlie Benante also spoke positively about a new record. He noted, “Yeah. We talked about that. We’ll see. We record a lot, and it’s probably just spending time with it and seeing what shows are good or taking a song from this show or a song from that show and compiling it for a live record. I would love to do that.”
Still, Zakk Wylde said it wasn’t on their plans, explaining earlier this year, “I guess that would be a bridge we’d cross when we get there. But we’re so busy doing this right now, we’ve never even thought about it.”
Pantera will perform in Seattle on August 30. Later, they will also play at Aftershock Festival on October 10.
