“I can’t fix the situation,’ the renter wrote on a popular Reddit forum
A renter is dealing with a less-than-ideal living situation thanks to their messy .
In a Nov. 3 on Reddit’s “Bad Roommates” forum, a user — who posted anonymously under the name DramedyWar — wrote that their current roommate does not clean up after themselves.
Posting photos of a kitchen sink and counter stacked with dishes, as well as a filthy stove top and dirty bucket, the user wrote that their roommate last cleaned her dishes “when she had someone visiting over a month ago,” adding: “The bucket is also a month old and smelled like sewage water.”
“There is rotting food and shrimp in the dishes so they smell and have gathered flies,” the Redditor continued, noting that the roommate “was my friend but now I am so drained and I can’t fix the situation.”
“I only pass through the kitchen to grab something to eat and can’t really cook. When I want to drink water, I feel too disgusted to drink from the sink so I buy bottles,” they added.

The Reddit user included some clarification in the comments section, sharing that their roommate “has depression and chronic migraines.”
“She refuses to go to a therapist for her depression. Her room is also always cluttered and I can’t see the room’s floor,” they continued.
“This is her mother’s house and I can’t move anytime [soon] because of financial issues,” the Redditor then explained, also sharing that while they have had “lots of talks” with their roommate throughout the year, nothing has changed, and the roommate has even said she “doesn’t care” about the current state of the house.
“What frustrates me most is that when she has guests over, she finds the will to clean everything and be presentable. I’ve been angry, petty, tried to talk it through but she just doesn’t care,” the user added.
Many Reddit users voiced their support for the original poster.
“You have to move dude,” one user commented, as another replied, “You won’t change this person. One of you has to move, doesn’t matter who.”
“I do not understand how people allow themselves to become this disgusting and lazy. Sorry you’re dealing with that,” another wrote.
One commenter urged the original poster to find a new living situation as soon as possible, while also suggesting a financial strategy to help save for a deposit.
“You gotta go. Somehow, someway,” they wrote. “Make an agreement to not pay rent & save for a deposit elsewhere. Let people tour with that landfill on the counter and watch nobody rent the place after you. But either way you have to figure it out and go.”
