Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk debut in Captain America: Brave New World has received some new details thanks to a character description released about his arrival in the MCU. While fans have been given a look at Ford’s Hulked out version of Thaddeus Ross in the first trailers for the movie, how his transformation occurs has now just become a little clearer.
Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe do not necessarily follow the exact same paths when it comes to the origin stories of certain characters, and that is true of Red Hulk, who is getting a new origin story in his MCU debut. While there are still some who believe that Bruce Banner’s Hulk will make an appearance in the new movie, he will seemingly not have anything to do with the creation of the monstrous alternate Hulk. The character description, as shared by Heroic Hollywood, reads:
“A monster of Samuel Sterns’ making. Red Hulk is an incredibly strong and formidable foe. His skin radiates intense heat, burning everything he touches.”
This implies that Ross’ transformation into Red Hulk will be instigated by Brave New World’s villain, Samuel Sterns aka The Leader. Played again by Tim Blake Nelson, reprising his role from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, The Leader is set to play an unexpected role in the new Captain America movie, especially considering how dislocated from the rest of the franchise the original Hulk movie is. However, Brave New World will act as something of an Incredible Hulk reunion movie, with Liv Tyler also returning as Betty Ross.
Red Hulk Will Have One of His Iconic Powers
While there have been several characters in the MCU to have their powers changed in the translation from page to screen, the new Red Hulk description notes that he will be retaining one of the powers that fans have seen often in Marvel Comics; an ability to radiate heat. As if the sheer might and brute strength of Red Hulk is not enough for Sam Wilson to contend with on his first time out as Captain America, giving the new Hulk on the block this additional power makes him an even more formidable foe.
This is one of the reasons why many MCU fans still believe that Mark Ruffalo will make an appearance in the movie as the original Hulk, as the only way to really fight a Hulk…is with a Hulk. Ruffalo himself stoked rumors of his not-so-jolly Green Giant turning up to save the day in the film back in February, when he appeared to agree that he was in the movie during an interview. Later, this was refuted, and it was claimed by several sources that Ruffalo had simply misspoke, and he is definitely not in the movie.

This kind of possible inclusion of Ruffalo is the type of thing that can often lead to many audiences coming out of the cinema feeling a little let down when expected cameos do not happen. For that reason, it is hard for Marvel Studios to really win due to the many rumors that frequently circulate around new movies and TV shows. In the end, the best thing audiences can do is go into the theater just expecting to be entertained, and take anything beyond that as a bonus.
