The hugely successful world of Reacher will expand, as the spin-off led by Maria Sten as Frances Neagley has now been given a series order by Prime Video. The project, which will be the first (no doubt of many) spin-offs in the Reacher franchise, was first announced last month, with the studio and streamer clearly pleased with what they’ve seen. A new synopsis for the series has also now been released courtesy of Variety:
“The Untitled Neagley Project” focuses on Sten’s Frances Neagley, a private investigator in Jack Reacher’s circle. “When she learns that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident, she becomes hell bent on justice,” the show’s synopsis reads. “Using everything she’s learned from Jack Reacher and her time as a member of the 110 Special Investigators, Neagley puts herself on a dangerous path to uncover a menacing evil.”
The series order announcement was made by Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke at the Prime Video Presents: Trailblazers event in London, with Sten revealing to the audience that she cannot wait to return as Neagley and lead her own action adventure. Sten also promised that despite going it alone, the series is “still Reacher.”
“I love Neagley. She’s so fun to play, she’s so quirky and has so much complexity. I love doing character work, that’s how I was trained. I read all the books that she was in… I got into what I felt was her psyche. So for me I had it all there and I’m just thrilled to expand upon it further.
It’s still ‘Reacher.’ It’s still fun, splashy action and quick dialogue but it has something that’s Neagley, not Reacher. It’s the same fun tone but [the writers] make it its own.”
The Neagley series has been developed by Reacher creator Nick Santora alongside Nicholas Wootton, who is best known for his work on Law & Order. The pair will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers on the series, with the likes of Jack Reacher creator and author Lee Child, Don Granger and Lisa Kussner, and Skydance Television’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Matt Thunell also on board as producers.
The Reacher Spin-off Promises To Continue the Legacy
Produced by a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios, Skydance Television and CBS Studios, the Reacher spin-off promises to continue the legacy that began with the Alan Ritchson-led series. As Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios explained:
“As ‘Reacher’ continues to resonate with our global customers in a profound way, expanding on the storytelling and characters with a spinoff was an easy decision. With Nick and Nicholas as well as our partners Skydance and CBS Studios, we’re confident this new chapter, starring the amazing Maria Sten, will not only honor the ‘Reacher’ legacy but also bring fresh energy and excitement to new and longtime fans alike.”
Santora and Wootton also released a statement in which they praised Maria Sten and declared their excitement over exploring Neagley’s unique story.
“Lee Child created an immensely rich character with Neagley, and Maria Sten brought her to life in such a vivid, authentic way in Reacher. Amazon, Skydance Television, and CBS Studios have been tremendous partners from the start, and we are excited to explore Neagley’s story further and dive into what makes her so unique.”
A release date for the Neagley spin-off has not yet been announced, but the series will debut on Prime Video.
