In a recent interview with VRP Rocks, Rainbow’s Tony Carey talked about how John Mayall was obsessed with chicken, beer and porn.
While discussing Mayall, the rocker said:
“Beautiful guy. John Mayall would always have the same thing. He would order for… He had one thing on his special wishes. They call it a rider and that was a roast chicken wrapped in tin foil and he would date them, put a piece of tape on it, and date them. He had kept them for about a week and they were roasting.”
Carey went on to detail Mayall’s routines:
“So he always had his chicken and he would have parties in his room and he had a road case like the wardrobe case like you carry your stage clothes in and stuff he’d open it up and then there was a TV and he was famous for having the world’s largest pornography collection until his house burned down in whenever. He’d invite the guys in the band and he said, ‘All I can offer you is chicken but I got a lot of that.’”
John Mayall Recently Died
Mayall recently died on July 22 at the age of 90. His family announced his passing with the following words:
“It is with heavy hearts that we bear the news that John Mayall passed away peacefully in his California home yesterday, July 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Health issues that forced John to end his epic touring career have finally led to peace for one of this world’s greatest road warriors. John Mayall gave us ninety years of tireless efforts to educate, inspire, and entertain.”
Eric Clapton paid a tribute to the late rocker on social media, writing:
“I wanna say a few words about my friend John who I learned passed last night, sometime yesterday. I wanna say thank you chiefly for rescuing me from oblivion and God knows what. When I was a young man around the age of 18, 19 when I decided I was gonna quit music he found me and took me into his home and asked me to join his band. I stayed with him and learned all that I really have to draw on today in terms of technique and desire to play the kind of music I love to play.”
Eric thanked Mayall and the band, saying Mayall taught him about Chicago blues and playing music without trying to please others. He saw Mayall as a mentor and father figure. Joe Bonamassa, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Geezer Butler, and many others.
