Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey’s plans of forming another band after The Who failed.
Townshend sat down with ‘Sound Up!’ to talk about his career with The Who. While talking about being on stage and performing, the rocker explained that they didn’t have plans for this year. He later mentioned trying to form another band with his bandmate and how it failed:
“I get asked that we wouldn’t tour, but that’s got nothing to do with the big decision about whether we should tour or not. Nothing to do with Roger turning 80 because he’s made some complaints, ‘I’m 80 years old, how can I imagine going on?’ I’m sure we would do a work together that might be a question about what kind of work we do. But we’re so different. To sit down and have a conversation about creating a new band with Roger and I, it’s impossible. Because we don’t think alike. We’re so different, you can’t imagine. So there won’t be a reinvention but certainly are not gonna turn away from a myth an ideology, a process, a brand like The Who.”
Is Retirement Soon?
The two might not think alike, but it seems like they agree on not retiring from touring anytime soon.
Earlier, the rocker said in another interview that the band was considering retiring and that they had plans for a farewell tour. However, during the same interview, Townshend put an end to the idea of it. He explained:
“I’m not doing a farewell tour. I think I was being sarcastic about it.”
‘What’s The Point’ Of New Music?
After nearly 60 years, The Who is still going strong but they prefer sticking to the classics.
In another interview, Daltrey spoke to NME about the chances of new songs. He said that he and Townshend are probably done with the recording studio after putting out 12 studio albums:
“What’s the point? Why bother with records? We dropped an album four years ago, and it didn’t do much. It’s a solid album, but there just isn’t much interest in new music these days.”
