Before the now-viral Jane’s Addiction fight on stage, frontman Perry Farrell was featured in a recently surfaced interview with Esquire. During the chat, he talked about how you can lose your sense of humility when performing, similar to what happened during the show.
“Part of what Jane’s Addiction had going for it was we were all very cocky because we’re all very good at our instruments. That can be amazing because you get to hear amazing virtuosity, but you also lose something. You lose humility,” he said.
“Muscles don’t really work with rock ’n’ roll. I see a band with muscles, it looks funny to me. They should be fighting. Skinny kids, they should be making music or art. We don’t have to fight,” the rocker added in a conflicting statement.
The meltdown on stage happened only days after this interview. If you’re unfamiliar, Farrell bumped into Dave Navarro, swore at him, and even tried to hit him during a Jane’s Addiction show. Because of the incident, they had to cancel the rest of the show. They later canceled their next tour, and followed it with canceling the entire tour. They cited Perry Farrell’s mental health issues as the reason. Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins shared the news in a joint Instagram post just a few days after an onstage disagreement between Farrell and Navarro.
“Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current U.S. tour,” the band members wrote in a statement. “Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs.”
This tour was their first reunion in 14 years and came right after they dropped a new song, ‘Imminent Redemption,’ in July, with more music expected in 2025. However, the cancelation and the meltdown didn’t stop them from releasing new music. After ‘Imminent Redemption,’ the band also released a second single called ‘True Love.’
