In the new documentary ‘In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon,’ Paul Simon revealed it was hard to handle Carrie Fisher’s ‘Star Wars’ popularity during their marriage.
Simon and Fisher met during the making of the first ‘Star Wars’ film in the late ’70s. They married in 1983, but they divorced the following year. Carrie was famous from the movie, while Simon wasn’t as well-known.
Simon and Fisher Had Challenges In Their Marriage
In the old interview from the documentary, the singer’s long-time friend Lorne Michaels said the following about their marriage:
“There were lots of things that were remarkable about the time, but also, it was two people at career peaks, and that’s always complicated. All of it was kind of a whirlwind. Carrie was in a complete fame bubble because of ‘Star Wars.’”
In another interview seen in the documentary after they split, Simon explained that he was very tired at the time:
“I mean, what was I thinking? Certainly not thinking about life, you know, that you actually like have to stop. Marriage is very… it’s a hard thing to do. You have to concentrate on — not everything can happen at once, not everything is a media event. All types of mistakes on top of mistakes on top of mistakes. I realized I could become exhausted by — I could exhaust myself from emotional upheaval.”
Carrie Fisher’s Words On Marrying Simon
Fisher also talked about the marriage in an earlier chat. She said she believed it was a mistake and continued:
“Well, because I think, if you look at me, at the most, you can think I’m an interesting girlfriend. But a wife? I think you’re going to be disappointed. Poor Paul. He had to put up with a lot with me. I think, ultimately, I fell into the heading’ good anecdote, bad reality.’ I was really good for material, but when it came to day-to-day living, I was a little more than he could take.”
Simon and Fisher kept seeing each other after their divorce, and they called it quits a few years later. When Fisher passed away in 2016, Simon posted on social media to express his sadness.
