Pattie Boyd recently sold her personal collection. The collection included the famous cover of 1970s ‘Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs.’
Emile Theeodore Frandsen created the painting in the ’50s and named it ‘La Jeune Fille au Bouquet.’ Eric Clapton bought it in 1970 and later gave it to George Harrison. Harrison gifted it to Boyd in the ‘80s.
Experts expected the ‘Layla’ cover to sell for between £40,000 and £60,000. However, it went for almost 2 million pounds ($2.5 million) at Christie’s auction in London.
The Auction Was A Success
Pattie Boyd’s collection sold for a total of $3.6 million. It had letters, photos, and more from her time with George Harrison and Eric Clapton.
Boyd was thrilled about the auction results. She said:
“I am completely blown away by the enthusiasm of international bidders for these special treasures that I have always loved. I am so happy that new hearts will now enjoy them, as they enter into their next ‘chapters.’ I am lucky that my life today continues to bring me joy and different adventures – I would encourage people to follow their passions and live their lives with gusto.”
The Love Triangle’s Traces
The 80-year-old model first met the Beatles guitarist on the movie set for ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ in 1964. They married in 1966 but divorced in 1977.
Clapton tried to win Boyd over while she was still with Harrison. One of the items at the auction was a love letter from the guitarist. It read:
“Dearest L, it seems like an eternity since I last saw or spoke to you… If there is still a feeling in your heart for me… you must let me know!… Don’t telephone. Send a letter… that is much safer.”
Pattie Boyd and Eric Clapton married in 1977 but broke up in 1989. The auction also included Clapton’s handwritten setlist, photos from a Cream reunion, and the lyrics to an unfinished song called ‘Sweet Loraine.’
