Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is, no doubt, a wealthy man. Well, it is no rocket science: winning three Super Bowls, and investing in multiple sports franchises, will naturally bring in the dollars.
Celebrity Net Worth estimated him to be worth $90 million as of April 18, 2024. But he has barely scratched the surface as far as his brand and business potential is, feels Entrepreneur Joe Pompliano.
On Tuesday, Pompliano took to YouTube to illustrate how Mahomes would become a billionaire. Pomp said Mahomes has the potential to raise the profile of every organization, firm or brand, he’s involved with. And, if he manages to bring the WNBA franchise he has been targetting to Kansas City, his popularity, and by extension, the earnings will soar too. Pomp explained:
“[He’s] always smart about his money… Mahomes has taken [his] earnings [and acquired] equity stakes in other businesses… if Mahomes can successfully bring a WNBA team to Kansas City, the fanbase that loves him already will somehow love him even more… Mahomes could find himself as one of only a handful of athletes who become billionaires through professional sports.”
Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Magic Johnson are some of the athletes who became billionaires through various business ventures. Mahomes’ winning pedigree, popularity, and business acumen, are similar to the legendary trio. Pompliano’s prediction sure has some logical underpinnings.
How much money does Mahomes need for the WNBA team?
The WNBA’s popularity has skyrocketed over the past year. And, there has been an increase in interest to explore the league’s expansion possibilities. Mahomes has jumped into the race, knowing all too well that there are other strong contenders in the mix.
He is willing to fight and made it clear last week that he and his partners are not balking at the “more than $50 million” bid required to land a franchise. Mahomes said:
“We want to get basketball to Kansas City in general… it’s kind of a no-brainer to try to get a WNBA team in Kansas City, to this fanbase… [if] you talk about University of Kansas basketball, the Chiefs or whatever it is, the city of Kansas City is gonna come out and they’re gonna fill the stadium.”
Mahomes isn’t just being blindly optimistic about the fan interest. He has seen results through part-ownership in MLB’s Kansas City Royals (which began in 2020), and in the Kansas City Current NWSL team.
The Royals have seen their per-game attendance rise 43% from 2021-24, and the Current’s season-long attendance jumped 48% from 2022 to 2023.
In Field of Dreams, the late great James Earl Jones’ character says, “If you build it, he will come.” When Mahomes invests in something, the whole of Kansas City shows up.
There’s no doubt that they would root for a WNBA team just as hard as they do for the Chiefs. While on the other side, Mahomes’ good will, along with his net worth will keep climbing, much like Pompliano predicted.
