With The Office getting a spinoff and Community finally getting its movie, sitcom fans are looking at Parks and Recreation as the next target for a potential revival. However, Rashida Jones (who plays Ann Perkins in the show) has said there would have to be a great reason to bring everyone back. Reboots and revivals have become common place in the modern age, and while they sound like a surefire hit on paper, audiences have grown apathetic to the idea of their favorite show being resurrected from the grave. AndRashida Jones is adamant about avoiding this feeling were Parks and Rec to make a comeback.
Jones recently appeared on the Bingeworthy podcast and discussed the idea of a Parks and Rec reboot. The actress isn’t ruling anything out, and said she’d love to work with her old co-stars again. However, Jones had one concrete rule about coming back… it had to be for a good reason. The actress explained:
“We’re all still friends. We have a text chain. We talk all the time. We actually all really love each other. So, if there was a reason and a way that we would come back together, great! Doing it for the sake of doing it because nobody has any new ideas ? That I don’t want to do necessarily. But yeah, I think we’re all so down if the moment’s right and the reason is right, for sure.
Parks and Recreation Wasn’t the Network Hit You Remember
In the age of streaming, Parks and Recreation has become the go-to comfort watch for many, especially through the COVID pandemic. However, when the series was airing on NBC, it wasn’t a particularly strong contender in the battle for the best performing sitcom. Rashida Jones has previously reflected on that time. The actress revealed that the entire cast worked in constant fear that, like Little Sebastian, the show would be gone too soon. Jones explained:
“Every single season, we were like, ‘This is it. They’re not gonna want us back.’ At one point we were canceled and then the president of NBC got off the plane and changed his mind. It was like, ‘Eh, don’t cancel it yet, I guess.’ It was not really a thing at all.”
Of course, this could greatly affect the chances of Parks and Recreation ever getting a reboot. The Office dominated network ratings during its initial run on NBC. As a result, its upcoming revival, starring Domnhall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore and set to stream on Peacock, is as much of a commercial guarantee as it is critical.
However, that rule doesn’t always apply. During its initial run, Community was canceled several times, and frequently changed networks, with its final season airing on Yahoo!. Despite its troubles during its network run, the show’s success on streaming has strong-armed studio executives into finally giving the show its #sixseasonsandamovie ending.

No Parks and Recreation reboot has been announced yet. Were one to be commissioned, it is hard to predict how the fan base would react. Of course, some fans will always relish an opportunity to see the staff members of the Pawnee Parks Department return to our screens. However, others would be understandably skeptical about the need for the show’s return, considering it finished its NBC run on such strong form.
