Only Murders in the Building is back for a fourth season, and it is already winning over critics. The Hulu series premiered its fourth season on Tuesday, and if the critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes is any indication, it hasn’t lost a single step. Only Murders stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as the tenants of an exclusive New York apartment building whose true crime podcast brings them a little too close to their killer subjects.
The fourth season of Only Murders in the Building is Certified Fresh right out of the gate, with a 97% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, which continues the show’s impressive streak of high ratings. The first three seasons earned scores of 100%, 98%, and 96%, respectively. While it’s still early in the season (the score is based on less than 30 reviews), it’s an impressive start for a show that continues to deliver the laughs. Cristina Escobar of RogerEbert.com calls the new season “pretty fun,” while Matthew Creith of The Wrap says Season 4 “never loses a step.” The viewer rating, now dubbed the Popcornmeter, is not yet posted, as it is under 50 reviews.
In Season 4, the series takes a bit of a turn, as the trio of Charles (Martin), Oliver (Short), and Mabel (Gomez) travel to Los Angeles, where a movie is being produced about their experiences with the podcast and the murders they get tied up in. They don’t stay long, as they have to return to New York City to follow up leads on a murder from season 3 (which we won’t spoil here, in case you haven’t seen it). They aren’t alone, however, as the actors portraying them in the film version of their lives tag along to see them in action.
Only Murders has won four Primetime Emmy Awards, and has been nominated for 49 in total. The series consistently ranks among the top streaming programs, and is a popular series among social media discussions. New episodes are released on Tuesday, and Season 4 is scheduled to release 10 episodes.
Who Stars in Only Murders in the Building?
The series stars Steve Martin as Charles-Haden Savage, an actor whose heyday in the 1990s has been mostly forgotten. Martin Short plays Oliver Putnam, an underachieving theater director, and Selena Gomez plays Mabel Mora, who are all tenants in the Arconia, an apartment building on the Upper West Side of New York City. When the trio start their own podcast about a murder in their building, they find themselves entangled in several murders.
The show also stars Michael Cyril Creighton, Jackie Hoffman, and Meryl Streep returns as Loretta, Oliver’s love interest. Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, and Zach Galifianakis appear in the new season as fictionalized versions of themselves, as they are cast as the “Podcast Trio” in the movie about them. Molly Shannon appears this season as Bev, a Hollywood agent.
