The 5 Gnarliest Moments in Smile 2, Ranked
Smile 2, the follow-up to 2022’s horror phenomenon is gory enough to satisfy horror hounds. These are the gnarliest scenes in the movie.
While it has become common for successful films to get digitally released faster than you can say “cheese,” Smile 2‘s quick turnaround is probably due to its run at the box office. While successful, the sequel’s box-office returns failed to reach the same heights as the first. Smile made $217.4 million at the box office in 2022. At that time, people were still getting used to returning to theaters after the COVID-19 pandemic, and even so, the film was a groundbreaking horror achievement and a huge hit for Paramount. Smile 2 has made $131.9 million, and while the number is still going up, getting a digital release won’t exactly help boost the box office performance. The marketing was pretty cool, but Smile 2 just hasn’t made enough money.
Why is ‘Smile 2’ One of the Year’s Most Important Horror Sequels?
Parker Finn’s Smile 2 is one of the year’s best horror sequels, but it’s also a pretty solid standalone movie. It only follows the basic rules of what already should be categorized as a full-blown horror franchise, but its story has nothing to do with the 2022 film that mesmerized Paramount execs and audiences alike. The sequel manages to be its own thing, with a much more compelling lead character and a story that fully resonates with younger viewers.
The film follows Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), a world-famous pop star who comes in contact with the entity that forces a creepy smile upon its victims, who subsequently take their own lives in front of another person – who then becomes “infected” with the entity. Under immense pressure and set to launch a new tour, Skye becomes the latest victim in a horrific cycle.
Smile 2 is about scope. Sure, it complies with the usual jump scares associated with modern horror, but director Parker Finn has managed to make a worthy sequel that doesn’t pull any punches. It’s gorier, louder, and much bigger in terms of what the demonic entity can do. Without spoiling anything, the final scene is absolutely terrifying – not because of what you see, but because of what you don’t.
About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control.
