One of Adam Sandler’s most beloved comedies, Happy Gilmore (1996), is finally getting the 4K Blu-ray treatment amid production on the upcoming Netflix sequel. As per a report by Blu-ray.com, international film distribution company Kino Lorber are now readying a 4K Blu-ray release of the 1996 sports comedy, which stars Adam Sandler as a golfer with anger issues, with the intention of releasing it “early next year.”
This will come as great news to fans of the movie and the actor, who no doubt cannot wait to see Happy throw his weight around the golf course and marvel at his enemy, Shooter McGavin, perform his iconic celebration in the highest definition possible. Released way back in 1996 and directed by Dennis Dugan, Happy Gilmore stars Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and the late, great Carl Weathers. You can check out the official synopsis for the movie below.
“All Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) has ever wanted is to be a professional hockey player. But he soon discovers he may actually have a talent for playing an entirely different sport: golf. When his grandmother (Frances Bay) learns she is about to lose her home, Happy joins a golf tournament to try and win enough money to buy it for her. With his powerful driving skills and foulmouthed attitude, Happy becomes an unlikely golf hero — much to the chagrin of the well-mannered golf professionals.”
While Happy Gilmore was met with mixed reviews from critics at the time, the comedy has seen a surge in popularity over the years and is now considered by many to be one of Sandler’s best movies. And fans cannot wait to see Happy return in the long-awaited follow-up.
Happy Gilmore 2 Is Now Filming for Netflix
Netflix officially ordered a sequel to Happy Gilmore earlier this year, with Sandler returning as the title character and penning the script alongside the original movie’s writer, Tim Herlihy. For the sequel, Sandler will reunite with Murder Mystery director Kyle Newacheck, with the follow-up all set to bring back the likes of Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin and Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit. New cast members include Nick Swardson (Just Go with It), Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer), Bad Bunny (Bullet Train), Margaret Qualley (The Substance), and NFL superstar and Taylor Swift’s squeeze Travis Kelce. Sadly, several prominent members of the cast, including The Price is Right host Bob Barker, Carl Weathers, and Joe Flaherty, are no longer with us. Sandler, though, has promised that Happy Gilmore 2 will pay tribute to all of them, with the actor saying, “somehow they’ll be involved.”
Plot details for Happy Gilmore 2 have not been revealed, but returning star Julie Bowen has now revealed that the sequel will feature flashbacks, with the use of de-aging taking the actors back to the old days of Happy Gilmore. Bowen revealed to Collider:
“It is really weird. This is not a spoiler, but because there are flashbacks, they have to put me in the hair and the clothes from then, which are not my faves. It’s fun because they also get to de-age me, which I’ve never gotten done. I’m like, ‘Cool, I can’t wait to see what that is.’ There’s a lot of really fun stuff. And seeing Adam [Sandler] and Chris [McDonald], and even some of the crew was the same.”
