David Fincher and Squid Game are not two names you expect to find in the same sentence. That’s why fans were confused and intrigued when the Fight Club and Seven director was announced to helm a new American spin-off from Netflix’s hit South Korean series. However, no one was as confused as Hwang Dong-hyuk, who claims he was never told about the spin-off.
Speaking to GamesRadar+ to promote the upcoming second season of Squid Game, Dong-hyuk said he was never officially told about the new American series. Fincher’s spin-off hasn’t officially been confirmed by Netflix. However, the news was broken through Deadline’s sources, which adds an air of legitimacy to the rumors. “I’ve also read news about David Fincher taking on a spin-off of Squid Game, and it isn’t something that’s been shared with me officially,” Dong-hyuk said. When asked for his thoughts about the new version, the creator said the uncertainty surrounding Fincher’s involvement means “it’s tricky to comment.”
However, if David Fincher is producing an American Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk said he fully supports the concept. “Having said that, as a big fan of David Fincher, you know, I hugely respect a lot of his work,” he continued. Details about Fincher’s rumored Squid Game series are scarce, aside from its American setting. Dong-hyuk continued:
“If he actually were to do the spin-off of Squid Game, I personally, as a fan, I am very excited to see what happens. You know, I can’t wait to see what he has in store.”
‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Is Coming Very Soon
The second of three planned seasons of Squid Game is currently in post-production, and fans cannot wait to get their hands on it. Season 1 was a sensational hit for Netflix, dominating international viewing charts and earning a reported $900 million for the company. More seasons were inevitable, as studios would always want to milk a cash cow. Season 2 sees Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) return to the games. This time, he’s entering with a mission: to save the other players and shut down the sadistic games for good. The new iteration of the games will come with even bigger twists. After each game, players will return to the iconic dorm room, where they will vote on whether to continue playing or to leave. The players that vote wrong will be killed, dividing the already tense players even further.

While Season 2 has yet to hit Netflix, Hwang Dong-hyuk already has the end in sight. Squid Game will end after its third season. Does this mean Gi-hun will survive the next games? Or, will his return to the arena be spread out over the final two seasons? We will have to wait to find out. But, the final two seasons are firmly Gi-hun’s story, confirmed Dong-huyk. He explained:
“When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of Season 3, I think it sort of naturally came to me that this was the finale. I believed that with that story, I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story of Squid Game and also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character, and I thought that we don’t need any further stories from here.”
