During a new interview with George Dionne, Nic Collins discussed the challenges of being Phil Collins’ son.
Nic’s bandmate from The Effect, Trev Lukather, was also present in the chat. Both Trev and Nic are sons of famous musicians. The drummer said that being in the same band with Trev is a blessing because he understands what he is going through.
After that, he shared how his background impacted his music life:
“As far as publicly or within the music industry, it’s definitely a double-edged sword. There are a lot of people who will open the door because of who your dads are, and that’s great, but at the end of the day, the first thing is if you suck, then people won’t give you the time of day. It doesn’t matter who’s kid you are if you’re not good and you’re not gonna make the money they like.”
How Does Nic Cope With Comparisons?
He continued, adding he doesn’t have a problem with being the son of Phil now:
“They don’t really have any interest. You know what I mean? But also, as musicians, you’re immediately compared to somebody, and you immediately get put on that. That is always mentioned in the background, which is fine. I think by this point, we’ve both gotten used to it, and I have no issues with it whatsoever now.”
Nic Speaks On Nepo Baby Criticisms
Last month, Nic talked to People about facing criticism for being a nepo baby. He said:
“I chose to look at it as a positive because it is what it is. I remember when I first started doing my dad’s solo gig, and you’d get comments like, ‘Oh, it must be nice getting a gig because you’re Phil’s son.’ I totally understood. I was like, well, that’s a valid perspective to have.”
The musician also remembered facing criticism when he started drumming for his dad’s gigs and Genesis. People paid more attention to his family than his talent, and it made him work extra hard to prove himself.
