A new trailer for the Shudder original film V/H/S/BEYOND has been unleashed. This will be the seventh installment of the popular horror franchise, V/H/S, with V/H/S/BEYOND all set to premiere on Friday, October 4th, just in time for Halloween. This time, the found footage anthology film will feature horror stories with sci-fi elements, and the trailer showcases everything from UFO sightings, alien abductions, and unexplainable phenomena, to grave encounters with strange creatures and infected humans. Shudder teased the new film in a press release saying this installment “will feature six new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape.”

The original V/H/S premiered back in 2012. Since Shudder obtained the franchise, and much to the delight of horror fans, the studio has released a new installment every year with 2021’s V/H/S/94, followed by V/H/S/99, and finally last year’s V/H/S/85. V/H/S/85 set a record as the most-watched exclusive film premiere of 2023 for both Shudder and AMC+. V/H/S/BEYOND is produced in association with Studio71. Each installment has brought something new to the series, offering everything from slow burn found footage, bizarre black mirror thrillers, and bloody body horror.

Early online reviews have started trickling in. Some praised the film’s fresh approach to the found footage genre, with Slash Film rating the horror sequel a near-perfect 9/10. They noted how the combination of horror and sci-fi genres has historically struck gold, citing blockbusters like John Carpenter’s The Thing and Ridley Scott’s Alien.
“Similarly, all of the filmmakers involved here wandered through very different corners of the science fiction sphere to deliver viewers something horrific, weird, and/or a bloody good time. While it may sound like a bold statement, this is very arguably the strongest overall collection of tales in “V/H/S” history.”
V/H/S has managed to deliver thrills consistently now over seven films, and while some creators may find the found footage format restrictive and some viewers may find it uninspired, many of the segments have excelled at incorporating the gimmick in modern ways. However, Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com took some issues with the latest effort, saying:
“The loglines for the segments in “Beyond” are some of the best in the series, finding new ways into horrific tales, this time either intentionally or coincidentally built around deformation. However, the execution often falters, as if the entire film needed more finetuning in some stage of production.”
