An upcoming action thriller could very well be what every action movie fan has been waiting for. Sounding like the perfect cross between Liam Neeson’s 2008 hit Taken and director Gareth Evans’ The Raid, the movie boasts an incredible cast of martial arts actors with enviable action movie pedigree, a filmmaker with a penchant for stunts, and an exquisitely no-nonsense plot that should allow for the punches, kicks, and everything else in between to fly hard and fast.
Titled The Furious (which should tell you everything you need to know about what we’re in for), the action outing is all set to be helmed by Tanigaki Kenji, who is best known for his stunt work in the likes of the Donnie Yen movie Raging Fire, G.I. Joe spin-off Snake Eyes, and this year’s martial arts hit Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Without further ado, you can check out the synopsis for The Furious below, courtesy of Variety:
“Written by Mak Tin Shu, the film follows a simple tradesman (portrayed by mainland Chinese star Xie Miao) who fights his way through a complex web of criminals and evil agents in a frantic attempt to win back his kidnapped daughter by any means necessary.”
The Furious Could Land on Netflix or Another Streamer
Having no doubt successfully conjured images of Bryan Mills’ relentless mission in Taken alongside the brutal survival of Iko Uwais’ police officer Rama in The Raid and The Raid 2, The Furious will take both movies and smash them together, molding them into a mighty action movie fist. The Furious is produced by Bill Kong, who is best known for the critically acclaimed martial arts epics Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero. As if things couldn’t get any better, the movie has amassed a cast of actors and fighters, including Joe Taslim (The Raid, Mortal Kombat), Jeeja Yanin (Chocolate, Triple Threat), Yang Enyu (Eye for an Eye 2), Brian Le (The Brothers Sun), Joey Iwanaga (Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter Part I – The Final), and Yayan Ruhian (The Raid, The Raid 2).

Action movie fans have been waiting patiently.
Kong has even teased the action-packed finale of The Furious, revealing that the final 15–20 minutes of the movie will consist of nothing but hardcore action. He revealed to Variety:
“But you need these drama scenes between the fighting to let the audience breathe. To keep them relating to the characters. I could never be a director.
If we fail, ‘The Furious’ will only be as good as ‘The Raid’ or ‘Taken.’ We also want the characters to move people.”
At present, The Furious does not yet have a release date or a distributor. Co-producer Todd Brown and XYZ Films (The Raid, The Night Comes for Us, Headshot) have stated to Variety that “a buyers meeting will take place in Toronto,” and streamers such as “Netflix and others are invited.” He added, “Obviously, we are targeting a theatrical release, but we also have a takeout price in mind if a streamer really wants to take the film off our hands.” Whichever studio is lucky enough to grab this action movie gem will surely have picked up a masterpiece.
