Netflix is returning to Night City with a new project in the Cyberpunk universe. Unveiled at the streamer’s ongoing Geeked Week, video game developers CD Projekt Red are reuniting with the biggest streaming platform in the world to create a new animated series, set in the same universe as the adored Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. A spin-off of the hit video game, Cyberpunk 2077, technology has advanced so much that body modification has become normalized, and part of fashion, accentuating power and social class. While the “corps” of the major world industries live in luxury, the mercenaries for hire, known as Edgerunners, live in squalor, using illegal body modifications with extreme risk.
No other details about the project have yet been revealed by Netflix or CD Projekt Red, outside the new show’s existence. Fans are desperately hoping for a sequel to Edgerunners. However, it is far more likely that the project will be another, separate spin-off set in the same universe. It is also unclear whether the new project will be an anime series like Edgerunners, or if it will take the form of Western animation, or, more excitedly, live-action. The teaser reveals absolutely nothing about the new show, and the caption simply reads, “Netflix Animation CDPR Cyberpunk #GeekedWeek Return to Night City. More info coming soon.” Check out the trailer below:
The announcement comes just a few weeks after executives at CD Projekt Red revealed that more animated projects in the Cyberpunk universe are in the works. Michael Nowakowski, joint CEO of CD PRojekt Red said:
“We are definitely planning to do more in terms of animation with Cyberpunk, so I hope that’s enough as an answer. So expect to see more for sure, but that’s as far as I can go right now.”
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Is One of the Best Video Game Adaptations of All Time
Cyberpunk 2077 was intended to be the next big thing in gaming. The studio behind The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt was moving from fantasy to sci-fi with an original story in a world inspired by William Gibson’s Neuromancer. However, thanks to endless bugs and playability issues, the initial release of the title was disastrous. Then, in stepped Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to save the day and give the franchise the boost it so desperately needed.
The 10-episode limited series followed David, a young kid living in the slums of Night City who discovers an incredibly powerful, military grade body modification. After getting kicked out of school, David uses the mod to become an Edgerunner, making a name for himself in the City’s underground syndicates. The show was beloved by critics and audiences, who still haven’t gotten over its emotionally devastating ending. The anime revitalized the video game’s player base, giving Cyberpunk 2077 the second chance it needed after several major updates and additional DLC. As well as saving the franchise, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners earned the coveted CrunchyRoll Anime of the Year Award following its release (the anime equivalent of the Emmys).
