Proceed with caution as Black Mirror has returned as part of Netflix Geeked Week with the first teaser for Season 7. Black Mirror began life back in 2011 in the U.K. and is an anthology series that revolves around people’s personal lives and how technology manipulates their behavior. Of course, as we all now expect with technology, it often destroys their lives. Leaping between high-concept science fiction to smaller, more intimate, and more grounded stories, Black Mirror expertly comments on and explores contemporary, dystopian themes. Many of which hit way too close to home. You can check out the eerie teaser below, which reveals both the all-star cast and a 2025 release window.
The unlucky A-listers chosen to face the Black Mirror this time around includes…deep breath… Awkwafina (Jackpot), Milanka Brooks (Mum And I Don’t Talk Anymore), Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who), Emma Corrin (Deadpool and Wolverine), Patsy Ferran (Firebrand), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Lewis Gribben (Blade Runner 2099), Osy Ikhile (Citadel), Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation), Siena Kelly (Domino Day), Billy Magnussen (Road House), Rosy McEwen (Blue Jean), Cristin Milioti (The Penguin), Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids), Issa Rae (Barbie), Paul G. Raymond (Horrible Histories), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) and Harriet Walter (Succession).
Often compared to such iconic sci-fi shows as The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits, Black Mirror has been met with rave reviews since the start and has since been awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie several times. The last time audiences dared to peer into the Black Mirror was last year in the show’s sixth season, with the show officially renewed for Season 7 back in November 2023.
The world of Black Mirror is also due to expand with a sequel (and potential spinoff) based on the characters introduced in the Emmy-winning episode “USS Callister” from Season 4. Something that has seemingly been confirmed by the return of Cristin Milioti in Season 7. This will be a first for the series, which has not yet returned to any of the stories that have previously been told. According to creator Charlie Brooker, the idea for a follow-up has been “brewing” for a while. Brooker previously revealed to THR:
“This has been brewing for actually quite a long time. And it’s partly because of the way that it ends. The first one ends like you could just carry that story on and follow where they go now. So it was always like, ‘Hmm, I’m going to do that.’ It was something we were looking at for quite a long time.
There were various iterations it went through, various versions we wanted to do and were discussing on and off for several years. But there are a lot of schedules to sort out, and then the pandemic got in the way.”
Has Black Mirror Lost Its Edge?
Since Black Mirror shifted from Channel 4 in the United Kingdom over to Netflix, many have been left wondering if the show has gradually lost its edge. This is a criticism that Charlie Brooker is aware of, with the writer responding to such an assessment when speaking with The Guardian last year.
“One of the criticisms we sometimes get is, ‘I prefer the show when it was British and everyone in it was miserable and everything smelled a little bit of shit and all the stories were horrible.’ And then it’s gone to Netflix and suddenly everything’s sunny and happy and everyone has wonderful teeth, and it’s full of Hollywood stars and it’s lost that edge.”
I was aware we’re going on a global platform now, so we’ve got to make these stories a bit more international. And I wanted to mix it up a bit, as in not just keep doing bleak-a-thons.”
