Guillermo del Toro‘s latest film, a project inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel, has finished production. The Academy Award-winning director of films like The Shape of Water and Crimson Peak took to X, formerly known as Twitter, in order to announce he finished making his latest film. Del Toro posted the following: “Shooting has been completed on “F” – Joy!!!” So, while he didn’t exactly give readers more details about the film, it’s exciting to see him celebrating the completion of his high-profile horror film, which is due to debut on Netflix.
The film, the unofficial title of which is currently Frankenstein, is a new adaptation of Shelley’s 1818 novel, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, one of the most important horror/science fiction novels ever written, and one that has inspired countless versions of the “man plays God” concept. The film’s details are being kept tightly under wraps, and currently del Toro’s plans remain an intriguing mystery.
All we know so far about del Toro’s Frankenstein is that the movie is part of his deal with Netflix. After the stop-motion adventure Pinocchio won in the animation categories at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes, execs at Netflix gave him the freedom to choose his next project. Del Toro chose his own version of Frankenstein, a concept he had been working on for more than a decade.
What has been confirmed about Frankenstein is the cast. It includes Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Jacob Elordi, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christoph Waltz, Christian Convery, and Charles Dance. Oscar Isaac, the actor known for movies like the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Ex Machina and Dune, will give life to Victor Frankenstein, the mad scientist who uses electricity to revive a monster made of human parts. Jacob Elordi, the young star of The Kissing Booth, Priscilla and Euphoria, will play the famous monster played by Boris Karloff and Robert De Niro in previous entries.
Guillermo del Toro is Undoubtedly the Best Director for a Creature Feature Like Frankenstein
If you follow Guillermo del Toro on social media, then you probably know what his version of Frankenstein could look like. The director of Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone and Cronos, is very active on his X/Twitter account and, from what we’ve seen recently, he spent a lot of time in Europe scouting locations. And some of the images he took during that trip are… haunting.
When looking back on his career and his peculiar way of adapting the horror genre, it’s easy to assume that Frankenstein won’t just be another iteration of the iconic tale. Del Toro has long been discussing his love for creature features and classic horror. Clearly, the filmmaker is excited to finally get his take on Frankenstein made, and we can’t help but join him in celebrating.
