Morrissey recently revealed that he agreed to a ‘lucrative’ offer for a Smiths reunion tour next year, but Johnny Marr ‘ignored’ the proposal.
“In June 2024 AEG Entertainment Group made a lucrative offer to both Morrissey and Marr to tour worldwide as ‘The Smiths’ throughout 2025,” Morrissey revealed in a new statement he shared on his website. “Morrissey said yes to the offer; Marr ignored the offer. Morrissey undertakes a largely sold out tour of the USA in November. Marr continues to tour as a special guest to New Order.”
This news comes after Marr reacted to a fan’s request for a Smiths reunion amid all the excitement around an Oasis reunion this week.
Earlier this month, Morrissey said the band’s popularity hasn’t faded because it was always about a “refusal to surrender to enemy propaganda. Something I still face today just as much as I faced it in 1983, 84, 85, 86, and 87. The Smiths do not end,” the rocker wrote in the caption of an Instagram post.
In January, Morrissey claimed he had been ‘erased’ from The Smiths’ history but insisted his role was key.
“This cannot work because I invented the group name, the song-titles, the album titles, the artwork, the vocal melodies, and all of the lyrical sentiments came from my heart. And so it’s a bit like saying Mick Jagger had nothing to do with the Stones,” the singer said.
It might be an unexpected turn of events if Marr changes his mind. For now, the guitarist seems to be certain that he won’t accept the proposal.
