Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has received a bold first review…from star Shea Whigham. The Tom Cruise movie recently unveiled its first trailer, and although that has set some high expectations for the eighth movie it the action franchise, we all know that predecessor Dead Reckoning did not quite live up to its hype in its box office gross, but became the highest rated movie of the series. However, Whigham has been reassuring fans that this is a mission that it would be impossible to miss.
Speaking with ScreenRant, Whigham suggested that he has already been reprimanded for previously saying too much about the upcoming “final” movie in the franchise. However, he was happy to heap praise on Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie, and set up what he suggests is one of the best movies in the entire franchise. He said:
“I’ve already gotten my hand slapped for saying things that I shouldn’t say, and someone on this call would be upset with me. I’ll tell you this, Cruise and McQuarrie are not hyperbolic. They love cinema, they’re both cinephiles. This thing is so good. This next one, it’s really, really good. It’s because it’s grounded in character, and that’s what McQ knows, McQuarrie knows, so well. They give everyone a little slice, a little moment. We know that Tom is the sun, and we revolve around that, and we’re happy to do that, honestly, but they always give everyone a little bit. It’s very rewarding to do them.”
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Needs a Huge Box Office Result
One of the biggest hurdles for Tom Cruise’s potentially final appearance in the Mission: Impossible franchise is the incomprehensibly extreme budget that the film has racked up during its production. At a reported $400 million, nothing less a $1 billion box office will be enough to make the film a complete success, and based on Dead Reckoning’s unexpectedly low –for the franchise – $567 million, that could be more impossible than any mission Ethan Hunt has faced in the last decade.
While Cruise’s epic stunts, and the promise of a possible franchise-ending story, should make audiences flock to cinemas next summer, it is hard to predict exactly how things will pan out. The last couple of years have proven harder to predict when it comes to which movies succeed and which fail. Low-budget horror movies have been killing it – literally and metaphorically- while some huge blockbusters have failed to justify their ridiculously high costs.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has totted up its superhero level budget thanks to several issues faced during filming. From the knock-on effect of the 2023 Hollywood strikes, to numerous reshoots, and, of course, the amount of money that goes into Cruise and McQuarrie’s dedication to doing those epic stunts for real and not relying solely on CGI, the film is one of the most expensive movies of all-time, but can it also become one of the highest grossing movies ever to make it all worthwhile?
