David Fincher is teaming up with Netflix on four new projects, including a spin-off to the streamer’s biggest show, Squid Game, and a new series based on a Hollywood classic. The acclaimed director of movies like Fight Club and The Social Network first partnered with Netflix to direct several episodes of the acclaimed crime series Mindhunter in 2017. Fincher then returned to work with the streamer for his original thriller, The Killer, in 2023. The movie, which stars Michael Fassbender as a meticulous contract killer, received good reviews from critics and audiences, and quickly dominated the streamer’s Top 10 chart. As a result, it was expected that Netflix would want to partner with Fincher again, but few could have predicted the projects he would be undertaking.
Last year it was reported by serial Hollywood scooper, @TheInSneider (via X), that David Fincher had been approached by Netflix to direct and produce an American spin-off of Squid Game, the immensely popular South Korean series. David Fincher hasn’t commented on the project, but earlier this year it was reported that the project has found its screenwriter. Dennis Kelly (Matilda the Musical) is attached to write the super secretive project, with the series reportedly titled Squid Game: America, although this is subject to change. It has also been confirmed that Squid Game: America will be a U.S. spin-off from the main South Korean show, as opposed to a remake/reboot.
Additionally, Fincher is also working on a prequel series to the beloved Jack Nicholson classic, Chinatown, for Netflix. Fincher has reportedly been working on the show for a while, with rumors suggesting that the series is “ready to go.” The Chinatown prequel will focus on a younger Jake Gittes (played by Nicholson in the original). According to the report, the new series focuses on the relationship between Jake and a fellow cop, Lou Escobar (Perry Lopez in the original).
Fincher’s other two projects for Netflix remain more secretive. It has been rumored that the third project is a new, original concept movie, similar to what Fincher did with The Killer. No other details have been announced for the movie. As for the fourth project, it is a complete mystery. It has not been confirmed (either by Netflix, Fincher, or scoopers) whether the project will be a movie or series, or if it will be an original story, or based on an existing IP. Nevertheless, a new David Fincher project is reason enough to be intrigued.
Squid Game Season 2 Is Coming Soon
While fans eagerly wait to see what David Fincher will do with the already mysterious Squid Game, a second season of the hit South Korean show will fill the murderous game show void that was left by the record-breaking Season 1. A second season of Squid Game was teased in the Season 1 finale, and was quickly greenlit by Netflix when the first season dominated its streaming charts.
Season 2 sees Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) seek revenge against the creators of the game, now armed with the immense wealth he won in Season 1. The latest trailer has teased the newest additions to the cast, which includes Park Gyu-young, Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, and Park Sung-hoon. The official description for Season 2 reads:
“Three years after winning Squid Game , Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”

Season 2 releases on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
