Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy recently named his favorite album of the 21st century.
The drummer took to Instagram to share his ‘recent conclusion’ about the best rock albums and picked one among them. He acknowledged that there are many great albums, but made his choice clear. He wrote:
“Recent conclusion: Muse’s ‘Absolution’ is still my Fav Album of the 21st Century! Yes, we’ve had some incredible music the past quarter century… but this is the only one to crack my personal Top 10 of All Time so far.”
Portnoy’s Earlier Comments About ‘Absolution’
In his yearly rundown of top albums, Portnoy once again picked ‘Absolution’ as his favorite in 2004, even though it came out in 2003. He said it was his top album of the year and maybe even the decade.
Fast forward to 2020, and Portnoy still loves the album. During the pandemic, he started posting videos where he went through his record collection and talked about his favorites. In one of the episodes, he pulled out two Muse albums — ‘Origin of Symmetry’ and ‘Absolution.’
He said of listening to the album for the first time:
“I remember when I discovered this album, it probably would’ve been around 2004 or so. I’m not sure. I think [Dream Theater guitarist] John Petrucci turned me on to it. He knew this song ‘Time Is Running Out.’ He heard it on the radio or something and then he said, ‘Hey, have you heard this band Muse?’ I picked up this album and was floored.”
