Mick Jagger started a dispute with Louisiana’s newly elected Republican Governor Jeff Landry.
During the Rolling Stones’ performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on May 2, the frontman criticized the conservative politician for what he called backward policies. As reported by Shreveport Times, Jagger told the following before playing ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’:
“We’re an inclusive group. We like to include everyone. The governor is here and we’d like to include him, even though he’s trying to take us back to the Stone Age.”
The Governor Responded With A Post
Though the singer didn’t explain what he meant, Landry quickly joked about Jagger’s age in a tweet, writing:
“You can’t always get what you want. The only person who might remember the Stone Age is Mick Jagger. Love you buddy, you’re always welcome in Louisiana!”
How Did People React To Landry’s Reply?
In the comment section, some liked his reply to Jagger, while others supported the rocker. One person said:
“Well, Jeff that’s an interesting response to Mick’s criticism of your policies!”
Another one wrote:
“Right On, Mick! You speak the truth.”
One other individual wasn’t happy that the governor chose to respond to Jagger:
“Our governor didn’t have to respond at all and he certainly didn’t have to take a dig at Mick’s age. He tries to appear classy and wise but deep down he’s no wiser than anyone else in this state. We’re on the bottom of many important lists, so I don’’t recommend being too cocky.”
At the moment, Jagger hasn’t replied to Landry’s tweet. Instead, he shared a picture of the band’s performance and thanked the festival and Irma Thomas for joining them on stage. Jagger’s comment came after Landry and others sued Biden’s administration over new rules about students’ gender identities. Landry and Louisiana Republicans say these rules break Title IX, which stops discrimination against ‘biological women.’ They’ve told schools to ignore Biden’s directive about using preferred pronouns and bathrooms matching gender identity.
