Director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan have cemented themselves as a powerful Hollywood pair across their joint projects. As they re-unite for their upcoming fifth movie together, titled Sinners, they have both taken a moment to reflect on their storied careers. Sinners takes their creative partnership in a new direction. Coogler and Jordan are best known for working together on Creed and Black Panther, but they have yet to properly explore the horror genre, either in their own careers, or as creative partners. Sinners finally changes that, and marks a milestone moment in their joint careers.
The pair took to X to share a behind-the-scenes look at Sinners, a new vampiric horror movie, and joked about their time working together. With the caption “Five projects, one legendary duo,” Coogler and Jordan appeared together in the video to count how many movies they’ve worked on together, before joking about their increasing age. In the clip, Coogler said:
“I’m standing next to somebody very special. This gonna be our [counts on his fingers]… fifth time working together. Been a long time, bro. Sad but true.”
Being a positive, supportive friend, Michael B. Jordan chimed in, saying “we’re looking good.” But, the self-deprecating comedian in Ryan Coogler got the better of him, quickly coming back with, “you are, at least.” Check out the video below:
The creative partnership between Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan has been a huge influence on both of their careers. While Jordan has been acting for a few more years than Coogler has been directing, they both got their big cinematic breaks with Coogler’s directorial debut, Fuitvale Station. From there, Coogler has also directed Jordan in Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, while serving as an executive producer on Creed II and III. All of which have been met with critical acclaim.
What Is Ryan Coogler’s Sinners All About?
Sinners finally sees Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan dive head first into the horror genre. Based on an original script written by Coogler, Sinners sees twin brothers (both played by Jordan) return to their hometown, trying to outrun their past. However, their warm homecoming is cut short when a new kind of evil is already there, waiting for them. The first trailer for Sinners was released just a few days ago, and teases the vampiric creatures preying on the small rural town, all showcased with beautiful cinematography (shot by Autumn Durald Arkapaw).
The teaser is enough to tempt even the most steadfast of horror haters into the theater to see what happens. It’s also incredibly exciting to see the pair work on an original story again. Black Panther was a cultural landmark moment, and Creed helped to reinvigorate the Rocky franchise (with a mostly new cast of characters), but, it’s been over a decade since the pair worked on a project that wasn’t based on a pre-existing IP. Alongside Michael B. Jordan, Sinners also stars Jack O’Connell, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, Lola Kirke, and Li Jun Li.
