Rob Trujillo sat down to discuss Jerry Cantrell’s latest album, ‘I Want Blood,’ in a new episode of ‘The Metallica Report’ podcast. While reflecting on their collaboration on the record, Trujillo praised Cantrell’s skills as a bass player.
“When I heard the demos for this body of music, it really spoke to me,” the Metallica bassist said of ‘I Want Blood.’ “It was time to reunite with Jerry and I wanted to be a part of this. Even from the rehearsals, we paired a lot of this music at Jerry’s house, in his living room.”
Trujillo played bass for three songs on the new album: ‘Vilified,’ ‘Off the Rails,’ and ‘It Comes.’ He previously worked with Cantrell in 2002 on his second solo record, ‘Degradation Trip.’
“Jerry’s one of my favorite bass players, in terms of on a composition level,” the bassist continued about his long-time friend. “He’s very tasteful, and I don’t know if he knows this, but I learned from him on the ‘Degradation Trip’ album, I learned the art of simplicity and how each note resonates and speaks to the chord. Less is more — this sort of concept.” It was great to reunite with that.”
Trujillo also noted the diverse sounds on ‘I Want Blood,’ comparing them to Metallica’s ‘72 Seasons.’ He specifically praised the closing track, ‘It Comes,’ for its complexity.
‘I Want Blood’ arrived on October 18, 2024 via Double J Music.
