Metallica bassist Rob Trujillo wants to bring back another supergroup.
In a recent interview with Metal Hammer, the bassist discussed reconnecting with other rockers and revealed the one supergroup he wants to resurrect. Though Trujillo’s current schedule is ‘complicated,’ he says he would love to take his time to reconnect with his former bandmates. He revealed the name:
“It’s complicated these days because of our schedules. I’m fortunate I’ve been able to write with for the past 30 years where I’ve basically gone ‘I want to be able to play with my favorite musicians, to call them up and be like lets jam, have fun’. Benji [Webbe] is one of those guys and it’s always good to hook up with him to do a Mass Mental show every ten years or so. The last one was actually in London, I think, at the Electric Ballroom, so I’d say we’re due! Maybe I’ll look at Metallica’s schedule and see if we can get a party going to celebrate the anniversary – last time we had Mark King from Level 42, Phil [Campbell] from Motorhead, it was just a big party!”
Did Mass Mental Ever Reunite?
After a surprise ‘instruMENTAL’ show supporting Tenacious D in 2013, the band got back together for some gigs in the summer of 2014. But instead of their original drummer Brooks Wackerman, they had Ken Schalk stepping in.
Before the Warwick & Framus Open Day 2014, Mass Mental rocked out at the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood 2014. A few months later, they headlined the Warwick & Framus Open Day. They performed a handful of shows in the next year too.
In August 2015, the band shared pictures on their Facebook of Trujillo and Sabal-Leco hitting the studio and working on some new tunes. After their latest appearance at the London Bass Guitar Show at Olympia in March 2016, the band disappeared and didn’t reunite later again.
Trujillo’s Recent Supergroup Involvements
The bassist currently takes place in the supergroup Infectious Grooves. The lineup consists of Mike Muir of Suicidal Tendencies on vocals, Trujillo on bass, guitarists Dean Pleasants and Dave Kushner from Velvet Revolver, and the recently joined former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg.
The band released their latest record back in 2020, and as it appears, we might hear new Infectious Grooves music very soon.
The frontman Muir explained during an interview with Loudwire:
“Yeah, we’re actually going to record a song. It’s been so much fun. You sit there and I used to think fun was overrated. My dad always said, ‘A lot of times people say what’s fun is what they regret the next day or a week later.’ But it’s been so much fun.”
This will be the first time we hear new music from Weinberg since his split with Slipknot. Muir continued:
“We talked to Adam, who is no longer playing live and we’re like, ‘Oh let’s write a song.’ It used to be, you couldn’t really do that because you had to ask everybody for permission. But people would stop you if you say, ‘I want to do this’ and ‘Oh you can’t do that’ and ‘that’s gonna confuse people.’ It was always like a battle and now there’s nobody that can tell us what we can and can’t do. That’s a great situation to be at. So you don’t have any plans and you just go like, ‘Okay, let’s go to the studio and let’s just record something and so we’re really excited about that. I think it’ll be fun.’”
