Metallica’s Kirk Hammett has recently talked about how much he respects his former teacher Joe Satriani and why getting compliments from him means a lot.
On a recent episode of The Metallica Report podcast, host Steffan Chirazi mentioned that both Satriani and Steve Vai have covered Metallica’s song ‘Enter Sandman.’ Satriani has said he really likes the solo in that song. Hammett said in response to his comments:
“That’s absolutely, totally, completely wonderful. I love so many of his solos. He’s Yoda, he’s my Yoda, okay? Every time Yoda says ‘Luke, Luke, you’re doing it!’, that’s how I kind of feel.”
How Satriani Decided To Cover ‘Enter Sandman’
Satriani finds one particular Metallica solo really enjoyable to play.
In another interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Satriani and Vai discussed their experience playing this song live. When asked about how they decided to cover ‘Enter Sandman,’ he responded:
“I was bouncing ideas off of my keyboardist, Ray Thistlethwaite, who has an amazing voice. You know, we just finished a G3 tour where he was singing some really old ’60s stuff. We were thinking, ‘Well, let’s move on from there and play a better mixture of songs.’ We knew we were going to be doing ‘The Sea of Emotion, Pt. 1’ [Vai’s and Satriani’s new song].”
He added:
“We were texting the craziest ideas for songs back and forth. At one point, I just threw out ‘Enter Sandman.’ I didn’t really think he’d want to do it, but right away, he’s like, ‘We’re doing that one. I want to sing that one.’”
