Max has canceled its Pretty Little Liars reboot after just two seasons. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin premiered on Max in 2022, and the show’s second season, subtitled Summer School, landed on the streamer in May and concluded in June. This iteration, which fared well with critics and viewers during its two-season run, was the latest series inspired by the popular original Freeform series that aired for seven seasons beginning in 2010. In a statement to Variety, Max shared:
“While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ we are so grateful to our co-creators, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, as well as the team at Warner Bros. Television, for reintroducing fans to this new iteration of liars who band together to fight the latest creepy villain terrifying Millwood. Their unique and modern creative vision – combined with the immense talent of our cast and crew – gave the series a fun, horror-filled point of view that paid tribute to its original Rosewood roots.”
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin followed five teens (the new set of Little Liars) living in Millwood, Pennsylvania, who find themselves tormented by unknown assailants. The teen slasher drama was developed by Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator Aguirre-Sacasa and Calhoon Bring, who served as a writer on Sabrina. The two brought a darker and more intense tone to the most recent addition to the Liars universe.
Pretty Little Liars: Summer Camp Leaves Unanswered Questions
Pretty Little Liars‘ now final season ended with a mystery, as a group of girls, disguised in masks resembling the original Liars, were spotted ominously walking down Millwood High’s hallways. Unfortunately, viewers will never see that story play out, and there’s even more to be disappointed about. We’ll never see any of the original Liars (Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, and Sasha Pieterse) interact with the new generation of Liars. While no concrete plans for their return were publicized, fans were eager for a crossover between the two groups.
Max’s Pretty Little Liars starred Bailee Madison as Imogen, Chandler Kinney as Tabby, Zaria as Faran, Malia Pyles as Mouse, Maia Reficco as Noa, Mallory Bechtel as Kelly, Sharon Leal as Sidney, Alex Aiono as Shawn, Jordan Gonzalez as Ash and Elias Kacavas as Greg. Madison will next reunite with her The Strangers: Prey at Night director Johannes Roberts for the horror flick The Pool. Kinney, who is currently competing on Dancing with the Stars, will return as Willa for Disney’s Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires.
During its run, the original Pretty Little Liars spawned the spin-off Ravenswood in 2013, which followed Tyler Blackburn’s Caleb. Following Pretty Little Liars‘ 2017 conclusion, a second spin-off, titled Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, aired on Freeform in 2019. The latter starred Sofia Carson, Sydney Park, and Eli Brown alongside original series stars Pieterse and Janel Parrish, and earned rave reviews from critics. Both shows were canceled after just one season.
