Max Cavalera opened up about his and Igor Cavalera’s decision to revisit and re-record early Sepultura albums under their new brand, Cavalera, during a recent chat with Czech Republic’s Project Backstage.
“It’s all from the same root,” he explained, noting the connection between their past and present bands. “It comes from the same spirit that we had. And the most important thing, the coolest thing is that the spirit of the original Sepultura is here with Cavalera. I think that is what the fans feel it most. And I think that is the greatest thing we have, is that what they wanted to feel is what we had in the soul and the spirit of the original Sepultura.”
Max left Sepultura in 1996 following conflicts over their management. Igor stayed in the lineup until 2006 before leaving to collaborate again with his brother, this time in Cavalera Conspiracy.
The singer compared their supergroup to their new side project by saying, “And we’re doing that with this — mostly with Cavalera, because we get to play the Sepultura material. Cavalera Conspiracy, we get to do new music, which we’ll do in the future as well. We plan to keep rocking for a long time. Nobody has plans for retirement. That doesn’t exist. I don’t know what that is. We are rockers — lifers, as they say.”
The Cavalera brothers released the re-recorded Sepultura albums ‘Morbid Visions’ and ‘Bestial Devastation’ in 2023. The same year they entered the studio for ‘Schizophrenia,’ which came out in June 2024.
Meanwhile, the two’s former band embarked on their 40th anniversary farewell tour and kicked off its US leg last week. Sepultura’s next show will take place at Concord Music Hall in Chicago on September 17.
