Max Cavalera recently talked to Metal Injection about re-recording Sepultura’s ‘Schizophrenia’ with Igor Cavalera. He reflected on one song from the album:
“Rediscovering the album on its own was a great journey. I realized ‘Wow, we were ahead of our time for teenagers to be writing ‘Inquisition Symphony.’’”
The 1987 track was compared to Metallica’s ‘Ride the Lightning’ at the time:
“I think, when talking to Arthur Rizk, the producer, Arthur was really like, ‘This is your ‘Ride the Lightning,’ man.’ I was like, ‘Chill, let’s just go for it.’ Like we did ‘Morbid Visions’ man, because that came out great.”
Re-Creating The Sepultura Album
Cavalera listened to the original ‘Schizophrenia’ album on repeat before he and his brother Igor started reworking it. The two also created a new track, ‘Nightmares of Delirium,’ for the re-release during this time:
“That state of mind as a young Max writing a brand-new song for ‘Schizophrenia’ and the result is mind-blowing because I think it fits the record, man. It’s crazy. It’s like, ‘Whoa, this could have been on the record.’”
The lead singer added:
“It’s gonna take a little time for people to get to know the song and embrace it entirely, but I think it has all the elements in this song that people love about ‘Schizophrenia,’ and it’s a brand-new track.”
A Reunion Between Cavalera And The Band
The Cavalera brothers haven’t played with Sepultura for decades by now, but Max is willing to reunite with the band for their farewell tour this year on one condition. He told Rock Hard Greece last month:
“I don’t know. I think I’m gonna let things happen the way they’re gonna happen. I’m not gonna force anything, and if there comes a time where we feel that we should make a reunion — okay, fine, as long as we do it the right way. Just like with these re-recordings. I think we made them the right way — honest, proper, from the heart.”
Andreas Kisser also noted a similar point about a final show with original members by saying everyone should be there to ‘celebrate and not trying to discuss who was right or wrong.’
Sepultura will hit the road in Latin America on July 6 and tour until the end of 2024.
