He is an officer of the law. Kind of. Actor and comedian Martin Lawrence is lining up a return to one of his most critically panned (but loved by audiences) action movie hits, Blue Streak. The Bad Boys star is reportedly “looking to revive” the action-comedy classic, with Deadline revealing that Lawrence is now working on a sequel, with Blue Streak 2 now in early development. Yes, we are all just as surprised (and sort of excited) as you are.
No cast or director has yet been confirmed, but the report does reveal that Cole Masika is now working on the screenplay, with insiders stating that Blue Streak 2 “is in early development with no other talent involved.” As well as presumably returning to star, Martin Lawrence will also produce the sequel through his production company Run Tell Dat. Other producers include Robert Lawrence, Rae Proctor, and Stacy Lyles, as well as Toby Jaffe and his RDV Films.
Released back in 1999, Blue Streak was directed by Les Mayfield, and was, in fact, inspired by a British comedy from 1965 titled The Big Job. Starring Martin Lawrence alongside Luke Wilson, Dave Chappelle, Peter Greene, Nicole Ari Parker, and William Forsythe, Blue Streak follows the Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Big Momma’s House star as Miles, a thief who, after a diamond heist goes wrong, stashes the jewel at a construction site before being carted off to prison. Released two years later, Miles returns to the scene of the crime…only to discover that the construction site has now become a police station. Disguising himself as a cop, Miles is dragged into solving crimes while also trying to work out where the diamond is.
Boasting the sort of over-the-top antics from Martin Lawrence that fans have come to expect, as well as a classic buddy cop adventure, thrilling action scenes, plenty of humor, and a villain that’s easy to hate in The Mask star Peter Greene, the Blue Streak fanbase (there are dozens of us!) can finally celebrate.
What Might Blue Streak 2 Be About?
At present, we have no idea what Blue Streak 2 will be about. Hell, we’re still getting over the fact that it’s happening. But based on the ending of the first movie, which sees Miles with his cover blown and heading off into Mexico with the diamond after being let go by Luke Wilson’s Detective Carlson, we can assume that something will drag the master thief back into the fray. Will Carlson find himself over his head while on a mission in Mexico? Or will something happen that brings Miles back to the U.S.? For now, we will just have to wait and see.
