Apple TV+ is ready to get the family back together. The Family Plan, which was once the most-viewed movie on their platform, is getting a sequel, with stars Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan both returning for more action-comedy fun. Although the film was panned by critics, it found its audience on the Apple streaming platform, which was apparently more than enough to warrant a sequel.
Per Variety, Apple TV+ announced that a sequel to The Family Plan is in the works, and in addition to Wahlberg and Monaghan, writer David Coggeshall is back to pen the script while Simon Cellan Jones will be sitting in the director’s chair. Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby will also round out the cast for the sequel, which is set to take place during Christmastime in Europe, where Wahlberg’s Dan Morgan wants to have the perfect vacation with his family. Of course, that perfect vacation could be upended as his past returns to haunt the family.
No stranger to action franchises, it seems Wahlberg has found his latest film series for the long-term. MovieWeb gave The Family Plan a solid review, praising Wahlberg for “having a hell of a lot of fun” on screen. In the official press release, Wahlberg expressed his excitement about the sequel news when it dropped, saying he’s ready to “step back into the shoes of Dan Morgan again.” The Family Plan star said:
“I am beyond excited to step back into the shoes of Dan Morgan again alongside my brilliant co-stars, and with Simon and David returning. Making ‘The Family Plan,’ and seeing it become an instant success with global audiences in the way that it did, has been incredibly rewarding. We can’t wait to collaborate with our partners at Apple and Skydance again on this next chapter for the Morgan family as their European holiday inevitably goes awry.”
The Family Plan Was Once Apple TV+’s Most-Watched Movie
The Family Plan became a global hit for Apple TV+ and once held the title as their most-watched film until the George Clooney and Brad Pitt release, Wolfs, hit the streamer. Despite its viewership success, reviews were not kind to the film, with the movie hitting a rather low 25 percent rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a consensus that reads, “Heavy on rote action and light laughs, The Family Plan aimlessly imitates an array of films that tell similar stories — and often in more compelling fashion.” That being said, the timing of its release ahead of the holiday season of 2023 likely played a big role in the movie becoming a big hit with viewers looking for lighthearted entertainment.
