Dire Straits’ Jack Sonni, known as ‘the other guitarist,’ passed away on August 30 with still no details on the cause of death. His bandmates John Illsley and Alan Clark bid him farewell, along with Mark Knopfler most recently. Knopfler shared a tribute message on Instagram with a picture of his late bandmate’s selfie, where he is seen smiling. Knopfler’s statement read:
“A sad farewell to our old friend Jack Sonni, whom I met when he was working at Rudy’s Music Stop on 48th St.
Jack was a genuine guitar enthusiast who loved to play, jam, and talk guitars and amps all day. He joined us on tour during the Brothers in Arms era and took to life on the road with the band like a fish to water.
Jack made friends wherever he went and will be missed by his many pals worldwide. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
The guitarist was revealed by the band that he wouldn’t be able to join the band’s following gigs due to health problems. Two days after the announcement, he was pronounced dead on the band’s Twitter account with a short explanation:
“Jack Sonni, Rest In Peace.”
