In a new interview with Heavy Consequence, Mario Duplantier said he feels that not much is different for Gojira since their Olympic performance.
“It’s really subtle because we’ve been a band for 30 years and we already had a career and we were touring world wilds but I I felt like it’s a plus. It’s a bonus,” the drummer replied when asked how their life changed after performing in the Olympics.
He added, “You go to a store, and some people, ‘I saw you at the Olympics’ but it’s not like a crazy change. Also, it’s a band to play. It’s not like one person. We’re a band, and entity so it’s not like one of us was the main guy with a name.”
“It’s really Gojira perform over there but many people don’t realize I’m playing in Gojira, as a band also. But no, what we can tell it’s the overall respect for the band now since we did that. And as I said, we were very lucky to do it and have this bonus,” Duplantier also shared.
Gojira performed a metal version of the traditional song ‘Ah, Ça Ira!’ from the French Revolution while standing on platforms outside castle windows in the rain. Their show honored the executed queen, Marie Antoinette.
Some people called the performance ‘satanic’ and disagreed with having a metal band perform. Notable figures like Andrew Tate also thought Gojira’s show was satanic and that they were trying to ‘control people.’
Still, Jerry Cantrell recently praised the band for their Olympics performance, telling Revolver, “I thought that it was a cool, surprising choice. It was also interesting to see Snoop Dogg carrying the torch when they’re so concerned with doping. That dude’s like the stoner from hell! I love Snoop, but I was like, ‘Holy sh*t, they’re cool with dope now? They’re cool with heavy metal?’ Maybe times are changing for the better.”
Last month, Joseph Duplantier shared that Gojira is working on a new album. He mentioned that they are in the middle of the process and prefer not to reveal details to keep it a surprise. The band wants to create meaningful and high-quality music.
