Just like us regular old Joes, actors are known to embellish their resumes to help them land jobs, and Margaret Qualley did just that to land a role in Happy Gilmore 2. The actress joins Adam Sandler (Happy Gilmore) and Christopher McDonald (Shooter McGavin) in the new, long-awaited sequel. In the original movie, Happy Gilmore had to learn golf after his career as a hockey player went under, but, in real life, Qualley is undergoing a similar journey to prepare for her unrevealed role.
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Margaret Qualley revealed that she had been cast in Happy Gilmore 2, and admitted to the slightly dishonest process of getting her role. After having her agent reach out to Adam Sandler and the producers on the new movie, Qualley’s husband, musician Jack Antonoff, received a text from the actor, asking if she knew how to play golf. Like any good husband, Antonoff blindly lied for the sake of his spouse, and helped Qualley land one of her dream jobs. The actress recalled the interaction, saying:
“I saw that there was gonna to be a Happy Gilmore 2 and I emailed my agents right away, and I said, ‘Anything it takes — no part is too small. Please. I gotta be a part of this, I’m begging you. Please. Whatever it takes'”
After Jimmy Fallon held up a screenshot of the texts between Jack Antonoff and Adam Sandler, Margaret Qualley dropped the bombshell that could cost her the role. The actress revealed:
“He lied for the sake of the family. … I never golfed a day in my life. I’m terrible, actually. [I] took some lessons, but mostly, I’m still bad.”
Happy Gilmore 2 Is Margaret Qualley’s Dream Job
Margaret Qualley’s role in the film hasn’t been revealed yet. During her appearance on the talk show, Qualley said that it’s only a background role. However, given the actress’ talent and rising profile within Hollywood, it is expected that Qualley could play a much larger role in the movie. While some actors spend their childhoods dreaming of working with Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino, Qualley said that Happy Gilmore 2 is the job of a lifetime for her.Happy Gilmore is Qualley’s favorite movie of all time, and Adam Sandler’s titular golfer was actually her first crush. To be able to work on the sequel has made her career, and Qualley doesn’t care how small the role might be. She said:
“It was the best thing that ever happened to me. It’s a tiny part. I’m essentially deep background. But, I can die happy now. [Happy Gilmore] is my first crush. It’s my favorite movie. And I adore Adam Sandler.”
Margaret Qualley isn’t the first new cast member to join Happy Gilmore 2. Alongside returning favorites, Sandler, McDonald, Ben Stiller, and Julie Bowen, Benny Safdie, Lee Travino, Bad Bunny, and Travis Kelce have also joined the cast. No plot details have been released yet. Production on Happy Gilmore 2 began earlier this month.
