Lucy Liu has responded to the idea of reprising her Charlie’s Angels character. Liu portrayed Alex Munday in the 2000 movie and its sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, starring alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. During a recent conversation with Entertainment Tonight, the Red One actress said she was “never going to say no” to the possibility of returning as Alex. But while Liu is open to another Charlie’s Angels feature, fans of the films shouldn’t rejoice just yet:
“I don’t hear much of anything until it actually happens. I’m never going to say no to that. But I would be surprised to hear anything that gets done or undone. You just never know until it happens.”
Charlie’s Angels and its sequel were based on Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts’ 1976 hit series about three women working as private investigators for a mysterious employer named Charlie. The series’ first season was famously led by Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, and Farrah Fawcett. When the movie adaptation landed in theaters in 2000, it scored big at the box office, grossing over $260 million, with its 2003 sequel earning over $250 million. Audiences were drawn to the nostalgic elements and portrayal of three powerful, skilled, and independent women in both the action outings. Speaking of what it meant to star in the film alongside Diaz and Barrymore, Liu told the publication:
“Being in a movie where there are three women together that were strong and also having fun and just sort of taking a piss. That’s just sort of what it was. It wasn’t supposed to be anything that serious.”
Zoë Kravitz Would Love to Direct a New Charlie’s Angels Movie
In 2019, another iteration of Charlie’s Angels hit the big screen. Although led by a talented cast that included Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska, the Elizabeth Banks-directed project failed to impress critics and audiences. Charlie’s Angels and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle were both directed by McG, but there’s someone else who would be up for directing a reboot should it come to fruition. In September, while on The Drew Barrymore Show, Zoë Kravitz (who impressed with her feature directorial debut Blink Twice) said she’d love to direct a potential Charlie’s Angels follow-up film.
“Can I just say? I don’t know what the plan is, but if there’s a
Charlie’s Angels
reboot, that would be my dream to direct,” Kravitz shared. “Like, my dream. Those are my favorite movies — to the point where I’ve called my agent about this.”

Charlie’s Angels 3: Why We Need a New Movie with Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu & Cameron Diaz Returning
After a failed reboot attempt in 2019, it’s time to bring back Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz for Charlie’s Angels 3. Here’s why.
Barrymore, who portrayed Dylan Sanders in the action flicks, revealed she had asked her agent about the possibility of involving Kravitz in any upcoming project:
“It’s really funny that you say that, because I called my agent too and was like, ‘Would Zoe ever consider…'”
Though unconfirmed, the stars seem to be aligning for another Angels mission: Diaz is now off of her acting hiatus, Liu and Barrymore have expressed interest, and 2025 will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first movie. In the meantime, Liu’s latest project, the Christmas action flick Red One, lands in theaters on November 15.
