The Guardian asked Lucinda Williams if she had any memory that stood out of spending time with Tom Petty. Lucinda recalled the days she opened for The Heartbreakers back in 1999 and told the story:
” [Tom Petty] He was always very concerned with how I was doing and feeling. He took me on tour with him in the 90s. The audience didn’t know me, and people would be sitting there with their arms folded, waiting for Tom.”
During one of the shows, Petty, after seeing the disinterest in the audience, took the matter into his own hands. Lucinda continued:
“Tom saw this happening, so one night, he came out on stage, took the mic, and said: ‘I want you to listen to this next artist because she’s really good. You need to pay attention.’ It was just so heartwarming and moving because nobody ever does that. I had no idea he was going to do it, and it says everything about him as a person.”
The two musicians had become good friends, so Lucinda wanted to honor him after Tom passed away in 2017. She has recently come out with a song that she wrote called ‘Stolen Moments’ from her forthcoming album ‘Stories From A Rock n Roll Heart,’ which is set to release on June 30th to pay homage to her late friend and supporter.
