Gordon Cormier, who plays Aang in Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender series, is just as excited as the fans are to see the original show’s best moments adapted into live-action. Based on the beloved Nickelodeon series of the same name, Avatar: The Last Airbender is a live-action re-telling of Avatar Aang’s quest to re-unite the four nations after the Fire Nation has waged war on the rest of the world. Despite criticisms from fans of the original show, Netflix’s version was immensely popular. The streamer has already confirmed that the series will get to finish telling its story across two more seasons.
Speaking to ComicBook.com at Dragon Con, Gordon Cormier looked ahead to the show’s future, and revealed what he’s most excited about seeing adapted into live-action. The original series contains countless standout moments that have stuck with fans nearly 20 years after its initial airing. But, Zuko’s redemption arc, and the climactic final battle between Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Ozai are perhaps the ultimate fan favorites. Cormier agreed, saying:
“Introducing Zuko into the gang is going to be really dope. The Ozai fight would also be super sick. That’s going to be so cool with all the effects and everything. I think that’s going to look awesome.”
Despite the many changes made to the original story in Netflix’s adaptation, fans are still holding out hope for a good interpretation of Zuko’s redemption arc. The arc has often been described as one of the greatest redemption arcs on TV, so expectations are high. After spending the first season attempting to capture the Avatar to regain his honor in the eyes of his father, Zuko finally begins to listen to his uncle, Iroh, who tells him to seek out what he wants from life.
Gordon Cormier Is a Gigantic Avatar: The Last Airbender Fan
Almost everyone has that one show they could watch endlessly. Some go for heartwarming sitcoms like Friends or Brooklyn Nine-Nine, many prefer suave courtroom dramas like Suits, and others lean towards dark, historical fantasy like Game of Thrones (if you can overlook the final season). For Gordon Cormier, Avatar: The Last Airbender is his ultimate comfort watch. During the build-up to Season 1 of Netflix’s adaptation, Cormier stunned everyone by revealing that he’d watched the original show a staggering 26 times.
Cormier is currently doing prep for Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender and, to get himself back in the role, he may or may not have enjoyed a few more re-watches. Unsurprisingly, Cormier feels like he understands a lot about the series from his repeat viewing (honestly, we’d be a bit worried if he didn’t after 26 re-watches). The actor couldn’t help himself but indulge in what could be medically classed as an addiction, a few more times. He said:
“I mean, after watching it 26 times, you really start to figure it out. But I’ve definitely watched it a few times since then.”
